Return of the Obra Dinn ~ Trophy Walkthrough

Video guides of this walkthrough are fine as long as I am credited in the video and the guide linked!

 

Please note that this is an investigation mystery game. This walkthrough will absolutely ruin the game for you, because you'll just be setting everything up and unlocking all trophies around the end of the game. I recommend trying it blind first, then trying the walkthrough on a fresh save when you're ready to get the platinum.

 

There's a map in the journal you receive early in the game. To open it, press Posted Image, press Posted Image to get to the table of contents (if needed) and choose The Ship. Press Posted Image to bring up a larger version of the map you can scroll on.

 

A lot of this game is on timers. So if you get done with a section of this walkthrough quickly, you may need to wait around a bit for doors to open or prompts to appear.

 

Because there's a ton of back and forth between areas of the ship, I have only differentiated between modern day and flashbacks during this walkthrough. Most of the time you'll be led directly to where you need to be, anyways, as the game is fairly linear.

Climb onto the ship
Turn left and walk towards the wheel and skeleton
Walk around the ship until the man says “Hoy! It's too heavy!”
Go back onto the rowboat
Interact with the crate to get the journal
Hit R2 to get to the contents page – flip through if you want, but select Back Cover if you just want to move on
Press Triangle18x18.png to close journal
Automatically get watch
Go back onto the ship and approach the skeleton
When the pocketwatch is out, press square18x18.png

Flashback
Walk up to the man in front of you (with the gun)
Hold L2 and look at him, moving yourself/the camera until a picture comes up behind him. Make sure the whole picture spawns in – the “aura” surrounding each man will completely disappear.

From this point on, I will call this process “scanning”. While scanning, the screen will often go dark and some stuff may be written in your journal. Just let it happen; once it's over, you'll be able to pick up where you left off.

Turn around and go outside to the main deck
Wait for the black door to open and go through it

From now on I will call these “exit door”s. Unless I say otherwise, for all of these flashbacks, you just need to make your way to the exit door – you don't have to scan any people. These doors are often on timers, so just wait until the door unlocks (usually something will be filled in in your journal first).

Walk past the skeleton and into the captain's quarters
There are two skeletons in here – use the watch on each. You will need to go through the exit door after using the watch on each skeleton.
Stand in front of the couch/overturned table and put them to your back. Walk forward into the opened left door
Use the watch over the body on the ground – go through the exit door
Immediately turn left and use the watch on the body in the bed

Flashback
Walk forward past the woman under the falling mast until you can't anymore
Turn left and you'll see a man dragging a torso
Scan the torso
Wait until the journal fills in
Walk up to the torso
Wait until you get a Cross18x18.png Action prompt, then do that over the torso

You'll be back in the captain's quarters with the skeleton in the bed
Press square18x18.png and follow the smoke that comes out of the watch
When the smoke stops, wait a moment and the torso will appear
Use the watch over the torso

Flashback
You will be staring up at a man held by a tentacle
Look down and left
Walk to the group of three men and find the one laying on the ground in a pool of blood
Scan this man
Wait for the watch to show up, then press square18x18.png over the man

Press square18x18.png when you're back in the present
Follow the smoke until it stops near the cage
Use the watch over the man that appears

Flashback
Again you'll be staring up – at a man being sucked into some sort of mouth
Look down and left – the exit door is in the left corner. Go through when you can.

Near the skeleton and you'll see some stairs that will take you down a level to the gun deck
In front of you is an overturned cannon with a skeleton under it
Use the pocketwatch on the skeleton

Flashback
In front of you is a man getting hit in the face by the cannon. Behind him is a man running towards him
Make your way to the running man and scan him
Wait for the journal to fill in and the watch to appear
To the right of the man you scanned is a man holding a pole
On the ground next to the pole man is a body lying in blood
Use the watch on the man in blood

Hit square18x18.png and follow the smoke
When the smoke stops and the body appears, use the watch on it

Flashback
Scan the body in front of you
Turn around and walk to the cannon being held by the tentacle
Wait for the journal to fill in and the watch to appear
Use the watch on the leg sticking out from under the cannon

Hit square18x18.png and follow the smoke
When the smoke stops and the body appears (under the cannon), use the watch on it

Flashback
Turn around and walk until you hit an overturned table
Turn right and you'll see the exit door
Go through the exit door when you're able to

Backtrack to the stairs that lead to the main deck but don't go up them
Walk past the stairs on the left side
Keep going forward through a door until you're back outside
Use the watch on the skull and a few bones on the ground here

Flashback
Turn around and go to the stairs leading to the main deck
Scan the man under the stairs (he's holding spoons)
Go up the stairs to the main deck
On the main deck, turn around and walk to the man holding up the lantern
When you can, use the watch on the main face-down on the bench next to the lantern man

Press square18x18.png and follow the smoke
You'll end up on the main deck next to the cage
When the body appears, use the watch on it

Flashback
Turn almost all the way around and scan the man standing on the boat holding books
Go through exit door when you can

Go back down to the gun deck
Go forward past the cannons, sticking to the left wall
Open the first door on the left – you will automatically stick your hand onto the doorknob; press R2 to hold onto the doorknob so you can pull the door open
Use the watch on the skeleton on the ground next to the bed

Flashback
Exit the room you're in and turn left
Walk past the stairs and up to the two bodies on the ground
When the watch appears, use it over the right body

Press square18x18.png and follow the smoke
When the body appears near the stairs, use the watch on it

Flashback
Turn right and scan the body laying on the ground with the missing face
Wait for the watch to appear, then use it on that same body

Press square18x18.png and follow the smoke
Use the watch on the new body (it'll be next to the one you just dealt with)

Flashback
Turn around and go up the stairs leading to the main deck
Turn left and go up another set of stairs
When the watch appears, use it on the man being thrown overboard

Flashback
Turn right and scan the woman on the boat firing the gun
When the watch appears, use it on the man on the ground next to the one being shot by the woman

Turn right and go down both sets of stairs to the gun deck
Turn right and enter the big room
Scan the one-armed man on the chair
When the watch appears, use it on the one-armed man

Turn around and walk to the stairs
Scan the man holding up the trapdoor under the stairs
When the exit door opens, go through it

Turn around and walk to the stairs leading to the main deck
The trapdoor is open now – go down the stairs to the orlop deck
Turn left and walk forward, keeping an eye on the right wall
After walking past some bunks you'll see an animal skull on the wall – use the watch on it

Flashback
Turn right and walk forward to the stairs
Scan the man with the monkey on his shoulder
When the watch appears, use it on the man being dragged up the stairs

Use the watch on the new body

Flashback
Exit the room you're in and you'll be at the stairs leading up
When the watch appears, use it on the wrapped-up body at the bottom of the stairs

Flashback
Turn right and you should see the exit door
Wait for it to open, then go through it

Turn left (assuming you're facing the stairs) and go forwards until you're blocked
Turn right and follow the path until you come across a skeleton – use the watch on it

Flashback
Scan the man in front of you
Turn around and walk forward until just before you reach the blacked-out area
Turn left and you'll see a man's face in the window
When the watch appears, use the watch on the man in the window

Use the watch on the new body

Flashback
Turn around and walk to the base of the stairs
There's a man throwing a bucket of water onto a man on the ground
When the watch appears, use it on the man on the ground

Walk forward past the fire, sticking to the right wall
You'll pass two bunks and enter a new room (where the skull is)
On the ground in the middle are two men
When the watch appears, use it on the men

Turn around and you should see a man pinned to a pillar on the left in front of you

Immediately go down another set of stairs to the orlop deck
Turn around and go behind the stairs to access the stairs to the cargo hold, then go down them
Turn around and you'll see doors on your right; open the back right door
In this small room is a body of one of the monsters; use the watch on it

Flashback
Scan the man in front of you and the man to the right (with the pole)
When the exit door opens, go through it

Exit the room you're in
Walk around the stairs and enter the door on the opposite side of where you just were
Notice the barrels on your right
Use the watch on the empty barrel spot

Flashback
Just in front of you, under the barrels, is the man you need
Scan this man
When the watch appears, use it on this man

Flashback
Turn left and you'll see the exit; go through when it opens

This man was in the middle of the area. On one side (depending on which way you approached the body) is a padlocked door, barred windows, and a staircase. That's the side you want to go to
On the left side of the staircase is a leg bone and a shoe; use the watch on it

Flashback
Scan the man the other men are huddled around (the one missing a leg)
Turn around and go up the stairs
Turn around, walk forward, and you'll see a man lying on the ground next to two barrels
When the watch appears, use it on this man

Use the watch on the new body

Flashback
Go behind and under the stairs and wait until the watch shows up
Use it on the man lying on the stairs (he's behind the netting)

Go up the stairs to the main deck
Turn around and walk all the way forward
Scan the man holding the spike
Scan the two men on the ground on front of him
When the watch appears, use it on the dead men

Turn right a bit and walk forward to the man kneeling in front of three bodies
Wait for the watch to appear, then use it over the right-most of the bodies

Scan the man with the oars
Follow the gunshot trail left and scan the man in the window with the gun
Go back to the man with the oars
When the watch appears, use it on the body behind the man with the oars

Walk around the boat to a second boat
When the watch appears, use it on the only human on the second boat

Turn left and scan the man reaching into the open chest
When the watch appears, use it on the man on the middle bench of the same boat

Turn around and walk to the other boat
When the watch appears, use it on the man with the harpoon through him
Turn around and walk around the boat
Scan the man being pulled out of the boat
When the watch appears, use it on the man with the harpoon going through him on this same boat
Look up and right and you'll see the exit door in the middle of the water
When it opens, go through it

Go down the stairs once to the gun deck
Turn right and in front of you you should see a door that wasn't opened before
Go into that room and outside the window you'll see something hanging – use the watch on it

Flashback
Scan the man in front of you
Turn left and walk forward to a tied up hanging figure
Scan this figure, then when the watch appears, use it on him

Use the watch on the new body

Flashback
Look down and left a bit and you'll see a wrapped body
When the watch appears, use it on this body

Use the watch on the new body

Flashback
Scan both men in front of you
Turn around and walk forward until you hit another body
Turn left and go forward until you can't anymore
Turn left and go through the exit door when it opens


At this point, the man who took you to the ship will call out “HOY!” and that there's a storm coming. At this point, quit to the main menu and copy your save to BOTH empty save slots. It's finally time to earn some trophies

Load one of the save files and open the journal
Turn to Page 3 (The Crew) and select the crew and passenger manifest
Notice that each passenger has been assigned a number, 1-60. Everything is filled in except the Fate column
Whenever you select an empty fate slot, it will ask you to identify that person in the picture
Once you've clicked the person, you'll see a few tutorials that you can just ignore because I'm just going to tell you the answers. But for each person, you'll need to name them, provide their cause of death (if applicable) and who killed them (if applicable). There are 60 fates in total; you will only be able to solve 58 of them while still on the ship. You will solve the final 2 after getting off the ship.

If you'd rather, you can also solve these fates by selecting the person directly off of the pictures on Page 4. Your choice.

You will end up solving 58/60 fates, and after every 3 successful solves, the game will give you a message and permanently fill in the identified fates. You will not be able to select these people on the drawings anymore, which is helpful during the identification process. On the way, you will unlock (order may vary, depending on what fates you solved when):

Once you've solved all 58, you'll get a message that there's nothing else to do on the Obra Dinn.
Get back onto the rowboat (the exit is next to the wrapped-up body)
Eventually you will be presented with a report – just flip through all the pages
Click Cross18x18.png on the final page to sign it and start a cutscene
Eventually you'll regain control in an office. Just wait for another cutscene
Click Cross18x18.png on the package, then the letter, then the bundle next to the letter, then the monkey's paw
Use the watch on the monkey's paw

Flashback
Turn left and approach the man laying on the ground
When the watch appears, use it on the man
After the cutscene, wait until the watch appears again (while waiting, you can turn left to get more of an idea of what happened)
Turn around from the body of the man from before and press Cross18x18.png and you'll see a highlighted body under the middle grating (there's a pole sticking out of it)
Use the watch on this new body
Stand in front of the left grating and wait for the watch, then use it with the left grating
Turn right and walk to the man holding the glowing thing
When the watch appears, use it on him
Wait for the journal to fill in again, then turn around and enter the now-open door

You're back in the office
Open the journal to solve the final two fates:

4) Martin Perrot (Third Mate) – spiked – by beast
28) Fillip Dahl (Captain's Steward) – burned to death

Obra Done trophy_gold.png unlocked
Close the journal for the ending cutscenes and game credits

On the main menu, load one of the other two save files.

Open the journal and do the following solve:

1) Robert Witterel (Captain) – suicide with gun. Make sure you identify the correct man as well.

The next part is probably easiest done directly off of the drawings, rather than the crew list. What you want to do is select every person (and the initials on the Justice at Sea drawing! Don't forget those!) and say they were axed (or clubbed, knifed, whatever you want, but axed is the quickest option) by Robert Witterel. Since these are all incorrect solves, you won't have to deal with the journal filling in like during your previous run. You can track who you've covered – hovering over any person's picture will show “Axed (or whatever), R. Witterel” instead of just “Unknown.” You DO NOT have to assign a name to anyone; just the Captain (which we've already done, above).

When you've set all other people's fates (minus 4 Martin Perrot and 28 Fillip Dahl, because like before, you can't do anything with them while on the ship), close the journal and get back on the rowboat.
When you're flipping through the report, Captain Did It trophy_bronze.png will unlock.

If it did not, check page 3 of the report – the top entry will be Captain Robert Witterel, and it should read “Murder of crewmate (57)”. If it reads less, then you missed someone. If that's the case, on the title menu you should see the option to “rewind” on the save file you're playing. If you hit that, you'll be back on the ship and can try again. Or alternately, you have that third clean save I had you make before as a backup.

When you regain control in the office (with the letter in front of you), click Cross18x18.png on the letter to read it. A short cutscene later, and both Abandon Ship trophy_silver.png and Platinum platinum.png will unlock.

$20 on the US store.  Not sure about other stores.  There's only one trophy list, so you don't need to worry about regional stacks or anything.

I use your walkthrough but in a flash back i can only scan on guy ( Never could scan two time)

And i think it s my faut, i do not read correctly but miss chapter 2 part 1
