Introduction

 

Acting as an homage to first generation horror games of the early 90s, Back in 1995 is a pixelated horror survival game that offers a nostalgia trip as you fight through zombie-like enemies while searching for the truth about your character. Included with this trip are fixed camera angles and tank controls, neither of which are too stressing, though. There is no autosave feature in the game. Your progress can only be saved by interacting with Computers scattered throughout each stage. To avoid too much backtracking, you’ll want to save often so in the off chance you find yourself in a pickle against a group of enemies, you won’t be punished too much by dieing. There are unlimited lives available, so as long as you save your game, you’ll never get a true Game Over.

 

You can play through the game blind and, as long as you thoroughly check each area, will be able to get the Platinum within a couple of hours. If you prefer to use a walkthrough guide, both a text guide and a video guide have been provided for you below the trophy guide (this post here).

 

Passwords/Door Codes: Throughout the game, you’ll have to decipher clues to figure out three different 3-digit codes to progress through the story (there are two in Stage 2 and one in Stage 3). The Stage-related trophies do tell you how/where to find the clues for the codes (and how to decipher them, if need be), but, to avoid spoilers, they will not give you the actual code to use. The walkthrough provided, however, does. So if you get stuck or have any trouble getting those, please see both the Stage-related trophies and/or the text/video walkthrough for assistance.

 

Walkthrough

 

Step 1: Play through the story, keeping an eye out for the Weapons and Newspaper Clippings

 

The Weapons will be hard to miss, so you’ll mainly want to be keeping an eye out for the Newspaper Clippings in the game. There are three to collect (one in Stage 2, one in Stage 3, and one in Stage 4). Outside of those, the game is very linear. The biggest challenge you’ll have is dealing with the tank controls, but tbh, they aren’t toobad, they just take a little getting used to again. There is no Chapter Select option in the game after you complete it, but you can create separate saves for each Stage for a makeshift Chapter Select option. As soon as possible, at the start of each Stage, interact with a Computer and save your game to a new slot. You’ll be able to load these from the Main Menu should you miss anything on your travels. Once you have completed the game and received both endings (they’ll happen in the same playthrough), you’ll earn all the trophies. They will unlock in the following order:

This trophy will unlock once you have found the key to unlock the middle room and have answered the phone inside.

There are no Newspaper Clippings or Weapons to find in this stage.

Story Related. Cannot be missed. 

This will unlock after you have found the missing documents for GP and take the Zipline off the roof of the hospital. 

While playing through this stage, you’ll need two different codes to progress through the game:

  • The first one is located on the Whiteboard in the office where you pick up the Pistol.
  • The second is deciphered through a Whiteboard, a Note, and a Painting. You want to make a note of the second top salesman (found on a whiteboard in the same room as the Newspaper Clipping for this stage), his ID # (found on a note in a room next to the office area with the 5 worm-like enemies), and the number on a painting hidden in a storage closet (through a different door in the same area). Subtract the number on the painting from the ID # to get the second code.

The Pipe Wrench and Pistol are also both located in this stage, so be sure to keep an eye out for those (though, they are hard to miss). Additionally, there is one Newspaper Clipping to keep an eye out for (it’ll appear after you have found the Pistol).

Clear the third stage.

 

Story Related. Cannot be missed. 

This will unlock once you have returned power to the building, allowing you to take the lift up on the outside of the building. There will be another Zipline to go down. Once you go down it, the trophy will unlock.

You’ll need to find one code to progress through the game. One clue is found near the Shotgun (the food court). There is a certificate on the wall near the Shotgun (make note of the food sanitation number on it). The second clue is just a tad further in the game. When you pick up the key, use it to unlock the door across from the elevators. On the far right desk in the middle row is a note that tells you what 3 numbers (from the Sanitation number) you'll need.

This trophy will unlock once you have learned the truth about Kent and found/read all the notes in the Stage (after you have opened the desk in the bedroom, there will be one note in each room except for the dining area).

The last Newspaper Clipping is found in this stage. It’s located in the kitchen area, above the dining room.

Shortly after earning New word for the day, you’ll go through a door and be prompted to interact with a wooden plank atop a tall tower. Do so and the trophy will unlock during the short credit sequence.

How do we arm first? trophy_gold.png
Get the pipewrench.

At the very start of Stage 2, you’ll be in a Hospital room with GP standing next to you. Go to the left and on one of the beds is the Pipe wrench. If you somehow manage to play through to the first ending without picking this up, two more Pipe wrenches are available in the “real ending” sequence of the game (one in the top most room of the first hallway and one on a box on the side of the building when you first access the roof).

Get the shotgun.

This is located in Stage 3. After you talk with Harris for the first time, interact with the gate/stairs leading down into the building. Directly to your right are two wooden doors. Go through these and you’ll be in the Food Court. Kill the three enemies, then enter the small kitchen area (next to the tables with the green chairs). Leaning against one of the fridges is the Shotgun.

If you happen to miss the Shotgun here, you'll have another opportunity to pick on up during the "Real Ending" sequence. After going up the ramp next to the three AC Units, you'll eventually have to pass through a small open gate. Just past the gate is another Shotgun and some Shotgun Shells.

This is located in Stage 2. When you have to go down 3 flights of stairs (while killing some enemies), go through the door at the bottom and you’ll find yourself in an office. Go into the first set of cubicles and on the first desk is the Pistol.

Collect Dr. Randell newsclips.

There are three Newspaper Clippings you need to read for this trophy, 1 in Stage 2, 1 in Stage 3, and the last in Stage 4. They are kind of hard to miss, especially if you’re exploring each room, but just in case, their locations are as follows:

  • Stage 2 Clipping: After picking up the Pistol in the office, go through the door to the left of the Whiteboard (make note of the # on this board) in the same room. Go past the vending machine and the stairs and enter the right door (use the code from the Whiteboard). On the table in this room is the Clipping.
  • Stage 3 Clipping: After going down the 3 flights of stairs outside, you’ll enter the building. Just to the right are some wooden doors. Go through these and you’ll end up in the Food Court. On the far side of the room, go to the side with the tables and green chairs. On one of the tables closest to the wall is the Clipping.
  • Stage 4 Clipping: Climb up the stairs until you reach the room above the Dining Area (it’ll be a little Kitchen area). The Clipping is on one of the tables in this room.

After receiving the “first” ending for trophy_gold.png It’s over. Go home., you’ll find yourself in a loop, repeating the game. Don’t worry, you won’t have to replay through the entire game. You need to play through a very condensed version of the game until you exit through the same door you did for the previous ending. You’ll have to go through a message from the developer at the end (if it doesn’t start or pauses, just keep walking around and interacting with the rooms so it keeps going). Once the message is down, the trophy will unlock.

After earning trophy_gold.png It’s over. Go home., you’ll “restart” the game. Pick up the key from behind the AC Unit and go through the door. Go down the stairs and straight through a door, directly across from the stairs. On the table in here is a Flashlight. Pick it up to unlock the trophy (You’ll need to open your inventory and actually use it to continue on with the story).

  • When you gain control, check behind the AC Unit and pick up the Key
  • Go down past the stairs just a little bit and pick up the Painkillers just in front of the trash can
  • Go up the stairs you passed and through the door
  • Go down the stairs and watch the quick cutscene
  • Go down the rest of the stairs and go through the room directly across the hallway (unlocked with the key you picked up earlier)
  • Interact with the Phone/Answering Machine on the table

STAGE 2

 

  • Exhaust the dialogue with GP
  • Go left to the beds on the other side of the room and pick up the Pipe Wrench trophy_gold.png How do we arm first?
  • Just to the right of the GP are some Painkillers, on a white cabinet
  • Interact with the computer and SAVE
  • Exit the room through the door
  • Go left (ignore the elevator and neighboring white door)
  • Go past the stairs
  • Go into the men’s room (the door on the left)
  • In the toilet in the last stall is some Painkillers
  • Exit the bathroom and go up the stairs
  • On a box on the side of the building is some Painkillers
  • Go down the stairs
  • Go into the area with the 3 AC Units (3 Enemies here)
  • Check behind the AC Unit closest to the wall (far right unit) (Turns the AC System on)
  • Go back through the door you accessed the roof with
  • Go right and back into the room you started in
  • Talk with the GP
  • Exhaust the dialogue
  • Interact with the computer and SAVE
  • Exit through the door
  • Go up the stairs (back to the roof)
  • Go down the stairs and down the pathway opposite the area with the AC Units
  • Go past the 3 brown boxes and 1 red box, then turn the corner (1 Enemy)
  • Go past the elevator and the double wooden doors
  • Keep following the path around the building and past the green stairs sign
  • Go down 3 flights of stairs (2 Enemies)
  • Go through the door at the very end

  • Go into the first set of cubicles

  • Interact with the computer just across from the ammo and SAVE
  • If it didn’t equip automatically, equip the Pistol before you exit the cubicles. Try to fire off one shot so you reload the gun
  • Go into the open office area (2 Enemies)
  • Look at the Whiteboard and make a note of the number on it (437)
  • Go through the door just left of the Whiteboard
  • Go past the vending machine and the stairs
  • Interact with the door on the right
  • The code is the number from the Whiteboard (437)
  • Go across the room and check the Whiteboard. Make a note of the 2nd salesman (Jake Olde)
  • Go around the table and pick up the Painkillers
  • Just a little further is a Newspaper Clipping. Interact with it.
  • Exit the room
  • Go up the stairs
  • Head in the opposite direction of the enemies in this room and you’ll come to two doors. Enter the door on the right (you’ll end up in a storage room)
  • On the shelf, in front of three white boxes, are some Painkillers
  • Interact with the painting on the desk and remember the number in the lower left corner (4)
  • Exit the room
  • Now enter the left door (you’ll be in a file room)
  • Pick up the Bullets straight ahead
  • Go down and around the middle filing cabinets and at the very end are more Bullets
  • Exit the room
  • Go down, against the left wall, and enter the door when you hit the small corner (1 Enemy)
  • Interact with the note on the table. Make a note of Jake Olde’s ID # (214)
  • Equip the Pipe Wrench
  • Exit the room and kill the enemies here (5 Enemies)
  • Go behind the desk and interact with the door to the right of the blue chair
  • Start with the Salesman ID #, subtract the number you found in the painting. This will give you the code. (209)
  • Go in the room
  • Pick up the Documents on the table (red folder)
  • Go around the desk and pick up the Painkillers on the chair
  • Exit the room and head towards the door with the plant next to it (but don’t go inside - there’s nothing for you in there)
  • To the right of the door is a Hallway
  • Follow the Hallway and out the door at the end
  • Go up three flights of stairs
  • Following the building around to the left (and down)
  • Go past the double wooden doors, past the elevator, and past the boxes
  • Go up the stairs and go through the door
  • Head down/right and go back into the Hospital room GP is in
  • Talk with GP
  • Exit the room and head back upstairs to the roof
  • Head to the double wooden doors you kept passing (to the right of the elevator)
  • Go through the doors and up the ladder across the room

STAGE 3

 

  • Exhaust the dialogue
  • Head left/up until you reach a small gate
  • Exhaust the dialogue
  • Go through the gate and follow the path around until you reach an open area with a ladder leading up to a scaffolding (there will be a blue tarp on the ground underneath it)
  • Go up the ladder
  • Walk across two wooden planks and interact with the guy (Harris) at the end
  • Exhaust the dialogue
  • Interact with the computer and SAVE
  • Walk back across the planks and go down the ladder
  • Walk under the scaffolding and interact with the gate/stairs to go inside the building
  • Equip the Pistol (reload if need be)
  • Go through the double wooden doors, just to the right (3 Enemies)
  • Head over to the tables with the green chairs
  • On the table closest to the wall and to the aisle is a Newspaper Clipping. Interact with it to read it.
  • Go into the small kitchen area next to the green chairs
  • Pick up the Painkillers on the center table
  • Keep going around the room and interact with the certificate on the wall. Note the Food Sanitation Number (0824929)
  • Just to the right of the certificate is the Shotgun, leaning on a fridge. Pick it up. trophy_gold.png Looking for really big gun
  • On the table directly across the Shotgun are some Shotgun Shells
  • Equip the Shotgun and try to fire one shot so you reload the gun
  • Go back around the center table and interact with the computer to SAVE
  • Exit out the kitchen area to meet a new enemy. Kill him (he takes 4-5 Shotgun Shells)
  • Exit the food court via the double doors you came in through
  • Go all the way down the hallway (follow it when it turns left) until you reach a dead end
  • Go through the door here
  • Pick up the Shotgun Shells on the desk
  • Interact with the small statue in the top right corner to get a Key
  • Exit the room
  • Go back down the hallway and just across from the elevators (before the Hallway turns) is a door. Go through this (you’ll use the key) (3 Enemies)
  • Read the note on the far right desk in the center row. Make note that it tells you the password is the last 3 digits of the Food Sanitation Number, which you picked up off the certificate earlier
  • Exit the room
  • Equip the Pipe Wrench
  • Enter the door to the right of the elevator and blue door (it’ll be a wooden door you go through)
  • Go around the room counter-clockwise (so start going down) (2 Enemies)
  • Keep following the path
  • Pick up the Shotgun Shells on the desk
  • Keep going and pick up the three Painkillers on the right desk
  • Just to the left are the last two enemies in the room. Kill them.
  • If the camera angle has changed to the door, go back (towards where the painkillers were) and you’ll see a Briefcase on the desk below you
  • Interact with the Briefcase. The code is the last 3 digits of the Food Sanitation Number (929)
  • Exit the room
  • Go down the hallway (back towards the double doors leading to the food court) and exit through the red-ish door
  • Climb up the ladder to the scaffolding, go across the two wooden planks, and interact with Harris
  • Exhaust the dialogue
  • Interact with the Computer and SAVE
  • Head back across the planks, down the ladder, and back down the gate/stairs into the building
  • Go slightly down the Hallway and interact with the pile of rubbish blocking a path to the right
  • Pick up the Bullets and Shotgun Shells
  • Go down the stairs
  • Ignore the first door you pass and head down the Hallway
  • Interact with the blue door
  • Exhaust the text
  • Go down and left until you reach a ladder (but don’t climb up yet)
  • Just above the ladder in the corner is a Computer. Go to it, but don’t use it yet
  • On the floor in the corner are some Painkillers
  • Interact with the Computer and SAVE
  • Now climb up the ladder
  • Go right (up) and around the walkway
  • Turn right at the first little intersection
  • Check the valve at the end
  • Go back towards the ladder
  • Walk past the ladder and when you hit the next intersection, turn right (don’t go straight)
  • If it’s not already, equip the Pipe Wrench
  • Follow this walkway all the way around until you are met with another intersection (3 Enemies)
  • Turn right (the character’s right)
  • Follow the walkway as it turns to the left
  • Turn left at the first intersection (don’t go straight)
  • Check the valve at the end
  • Turn around and now take the path as if you were going straight
  • Turn left at the next intersection
  • Check the valve at the end
  • Turn around and follow the path all the way back to the ladder (don’t turn at any intersections, the path will be all clear now)
  • Climb down the ladder
  • Go down, directly from the ladder, and you’ll run into some stairs. Go down these into the central area (3 Enemies)
  • Go into the small area that had the two enemies guarding it
  • In the far corner, on the floor, are some Painkillers
  • Interact with the White Console directly across where the Painkillers were (it’ll have a colorful panel on its front). This will turn the Auxiliary Generator on
  • Go back up the stairs and back towards the ladder
  • Head to the Computer in the back and SAVE
  • Follow the path all the way to the left (ignore all intersections) until you reach the very end, with a prompt to “leap”, but don’t do so yet
  • Equip the Shotgun (and reload if needed)
  • Leap/Jump down. A small cutscene with new enemies will play. Kill the 3 enemies.
  • Hug the bottom/right and very close to where you jumped down, you’ll find a Briefcase on a console
  • Interact with the Briefcase and pickup a Key
  • Go back to where you jumped down and climb back up (you’ll be given a prompt)
  • Follow the path back around past three intersections, but stop when you get to the fourth
  • Instead of going straight towards the ladder, take the left path
  • Follow this all the way down and interact with the door at the end (the note to the left of the door is not required)
  • Kill the 3 enemies here
  • In the left corner (kind of behind you) of the room are some Painkillers on the console
  • Interact with the note near the center of the console
  • Interact with the controls just to the left of where the note was

    • Move #5 all the way left
    • Move #6 all the way up
    • Move #5 right (one block)

  • Exit the office through the doorway just right of the console (the door will be broken off, on the floor)

  • Take the path right and go through the door at the end
  • Equip the Shotgun if it’s not already (reload if needed - you want to have a full clip for this next part)
  • Go down the Hallway, opposite the blue door, and take the path left
  • Go down the stairs
  • Enter the first door you run into (the one you skipped earlier) (2 Enemies)
  • Go through the broken wall, into the next room
  • Optional: Read the note on the end chair, opposite side of the room
  • Go through the door to the right of the chairs
  • Go all the way down the Hallway until you reach a dead end
  • Go through the door here (2 Enemies)
  • Pick up the Shotgun Shells on the chair
  • Go to the far side of the room and interact with the Overhead Projector to pick up a Key
  • Exit the room
  • Use the key on the door straight down the Hallway (before it turns) and go inside
  • Interact with the left panel
  • Go through the gate
  • Go up the ladder, across the two planks, interact with the empty space where Harris was
  • Interact with the Computer and SAVE
  • Go back across the planks, down the ladder, and back through the gate you just opened
  • Go up the small stairs (on the right) and climb up the ladder
  • Follow the path right (kill the 3 Enemies)
  • Equip the Pipe Wrench
  • Follow the path around (kill the 4 Enemies)

STAGE 4

 

  • Exhaust the dialogue
  • Go past/around the first room (with the couch and the TV)
  • Go up the central stairs
  • Go up the stairs leading to the dining area (you can’t go up the other stairs just yet)
  • Go inside the dining room and speak with the woman
  • Speak with her a second time
  • Equip the Shotgun if it’s not already equipped and reload if needed
  • Exit the room and go up the stairs to the right
  • Pick up the Crank on the counter to the left of the fridge
  • Keep going left and read the Newspaper Clipping on the next table over trophy_gold.png The fourth dimension wall
  • Pick up the Bullets just to the left of the newspaper clipping
  • Go back down the stairs
  • Head down the stairs that led to the dining area and go directly across and up the stairs that lead to the little Jacuzzi room
  • Ignore this room for now and go around the right side of the building and up the stairs
  • Stand in front of the desk until you have the “check” prompt
  • Open you inventory and use the Crank
  • Exhaust the text
  • Read the note on the bed
  • Interact with the computer and SAVE
  • There will be a variety of enemies slowly roaming around throughout this area now. All can be killed with the Shotgun so just make sure you keep an eye out for them and kill them if/when needed
  • Go down the stairs and enter the room with the Jacuzzi
  • Read the note that is on the Jacuzzi
  • Leave this room and go down the stairs (mind any enemies)
  • Go straight across and up the stairs that lead to the dining area
  • Ignore the dining room and head around the right side of the building and up the stairs to the kitchen area
  • On the counter, where the crank was before, is now a note. Read the note
  • Go back down stairs and down both sets of central stairs, so you are on the lowest floor
  • Go towards the room with the pool
  • Go inside and read the note that is just next to the diving board
  • Exit the room and head over to the other building
  • Go in the room with the Couch and TV
  • Read the note that’s on the Couch
  • Exit the room via the doorway to the right of the TV
  • Go towards the central stairs and straight opposite of the stairs is a pathway
  • Take this pathway down and interact with the door at the end trophy_gold.png New word for the day
  • Exhaust the text
  • Walk to the end of the wooden plank and leap trophy_gold.png It’s over. Go home.
  • Wait for the credits to finish
  • Exhaust all the dialogue

 

THE "REAL" ENDING

 

  • These next steps will repeat in a similar fashion to what you did at the very beginning of the game, just with far less steps involved
  • When you regain control, check behind the white AC Unit and pick up a Key
  • Go up the stairs and through the door
  • Go down the stairs and watch the short cutscene for the enemy
  • Finish going down the stairs and go through the door straight ahead of you, across from the stairs

  • Open you inventory and use the flashlight to equip it
  • Exit the room
  • Go right, “up” the Hallway and go into the room at the end
  • Pick up the Painkillers on the table
  • Pick up the Pipe Wrench on the next table over
  • Exit the room
  • Go back down the Hallway and up the stairs (to the roof)
  • Go down the stairs and straight ahead-ish on the floor are some Painkillers
  • Turn around and walk past the stairs you just came down
  • You’ll run into a set of metal red stairs
  • Go up 4 Flights (kill the 3 Enemies)
  • Follow the path at the top all the way around
  • Go past the double wooden doors and past the elevator
  • Read the note sitting on the red box
  • Keep going along the path and down to where the 3 AC Units are (kill the 3 Enemies)
  • Just to the right of the third, angled unit is a ramp
  • Go up the ramp
  • Go left and all the way around
  • Read the note in the middle of the pathway
  • Continue along the path and hug the wall just after the gate to find a Shotgun and some Shotgun Shells(Try firing a shot to reload your weapon)
  • Follow the path some more and read the note on the Fan
  • Keep going forward and you’ll reach the area with the ladder and scaffolding from earlier in the game (kill the 3 Enemies)
  • Go past the ladder the follow the path to the left
  • Go through the gate
  • Go up the small stairs and interact with the ladder
  • Follow the path down and around
  • Read the note on the stairs
  • Go up the stairs, straight across, and down the stairs on the other side
  • Walk straight forward from the stairs and down a pathway that leads to a door
  • Read the note on the door
  • This ending section has a lot of dialogue to get through. If it doesn’t seem to be moving/going, move around and explore the area a little bit to trigger it. Fair warning that there are still enemies roaming around here, so try not to go too crazy with your exploring. Overall it’ll take a few minutes to get through the entire message
