After finally finishing Avatar...I felt it was time to review it. Thought about doing the trophy guide, but changed my mind....and decide to review it instead.

This game is based off of the movie, but takes place sometime before the events in the movie. You start out as a Signal Specialist sent to Pandora to figure out a signal the RDA can't crack. Since you have the gene to inhabit the Avatar's..(the blue skinned bodies patterned off of the locals)...you get the task of trying to infiltrate the native population. Along the way, you make a choice to stay with the RDA...or go native and stay in your Avatar body. Either choice denies you the chance to return to whichever body you leave behind. If you go "native"...your human body is destroyed and your stuck in the Avatar body. If you stay RDA...your Avatar is destroyed and your left in your human body.

Gameplay: I give it a 7 for gameplay....pretty standard third person game. RDA grunts get access to some really sweet, really big guns. The Na'vi get access to some decent melee weapons...and when upgraded can do some serious damage. So plan accordingly to the strengths of whichever side you choose. RDA are best at range and you can kill lots of Na'vi quickly with your guns...so try to keep your distance or the Na'vi will kill you quick. As Na'vi, you do have a bow you can use which will kill most grunts in 1-2 hits...but your melee weapons will destroy tanks quickly. Of course, if your trying to destroy tanks with the Na'vi bow...then you deserve to see those nice beautiful loading screens.

Along the way, you will have certain section challenges you will need to complete. Most are not challenging, like "lifting the fog of war", but some will probably frustrate you...like "destroy all ammo boxes". Even though some area's may look like they are open world....you will run into those nice invisible walls if you try to go outside the "play area". If you decide to run around in the trees....be mindful of the "edges", as you can, and will fall to your death if you walk off the edge of the tree branches. Ammo boxes and plants to replenish your arrows are plentiful...and can be restocked without taking any time. One click and your restocked with either ammo or arrows.

Story: I give it a 8 for the story. As I said above...the story is that you're a Signal Specialist sent to Pandora to decipher a code. Along the way, you have to make a choice on which side you're going to stay on. There is a Tree of Souls that has gone dormant, and you will have to gain control of this tree. Gaining control over the tree will give you control over Pandora.

As RDA, you will collect harmonics to trick the tree into thinking you're one of the Na'vi. As one of the Na'vi, you will have to collect "songs" to awaken the tree....and "songs" are just the Na'vi's way of saying "harmonics".

Graphics: I give it a 10. The graphics in this game are just beautiful. You can really tell they spent a lot of time and effort on these graphics. Colors are rich and vibrant....and the night scenes are intense. I had to stop and just look around the first time I entered one of the "night" missions. If you've seen the movie or played the game...you will know what I mean. The burned area's look really burned, and not some washed out brown/black color.

Sound: I give it a 8. Voice acting could have been better...but overall the sound was well done. You definitely can hear the sounds of the forest when your running around. The vehicles and mechs sound....well...like vehicles and mechs. I don't remember if I heard the sound of fires crackling or not...which considering some of the areas your in, that would have been a big boost to the score.

All in all...this is a well designed game and enjoyable for what it was. Overall, I would have to give it an 8. I did (mostly) enjoy playing it.

Ok...for you Saintdave

Multiplayer portion of the game....

Couple of different modes you can play; Capture the flag, destroy the crystals/missiles, team deathmatch, and capture control points. The game requires you to play 150 multiplayer games for the platinum trophy, but you can do them all in private matches.

Capture the flag...run into your opponents base and take their flag back to your base.
Team Deathmatch...kill your opponents.

Destroy the Crystals/Missiles...depending on which faction your playing, you need to either defend or destroy the crystals or missiles.

Capture Control Points....either capture the 5 points on the map, or capture a base and defend it.

All pretty run of the mill multiplayer action. As I said...you can do them all in private matches if you prefer. However, you can't make a private match with only yourself for the major of the trophies. Only one trophy can you do that with...and that is "Bring on all Comers". That trophy you can make a private room...start the game....and once the game starts, you can quit out. Repeat 150 times and that trophy is yours. The other multiplayer trophies you will either need a boosting partner, or just play them in public matches. I personally am not a big fan of multiplayer...co-op on the other hand is fun.

So if I had to rate the MP part of this game, I give it a 5. Nothing new here...standard mp action. Hope that is what you were looking for saintdave.

Martock and I can both confirm that the online trophies can be achieved in private matches and the 150 games can be done with the creat, join, and quit method.

Thanks to J4 for giving me that info on how to make the mp aspect much quicker. If it wasn't for him...I would still be trying to finish up the multiplayer portion of this game.

Nice review, Martock! What's the total play time for all the Online MP trophies? That's assuming you'd use the quick method for the 150 games...

150 takes about 2 1/2 hours. alone. The others aren't that bad. Lets say for the rest apx. 10 minutes each game once you join a game with your boost partner.

So, is that less than ~5 hours for the online? That's not bad at all...

I would say so captain. Mine took probably about 5-8 hours....but I was trying to do the MP the long way. I had 40 games in when I was done boosting with J4 and he told me about the shortcut....then it took about an hour and 45 mins to finish up the other 110 games.
