My trophy challenge which focuses on Japanese games was for a little bit turning into a discussion about FFXV which I don't mind, but I thought it would be nice to have a place where people could just discuss Japanese games in general and not worry about clogging up a competition thread. We don't have to talk just about the genre's mentioned in the title, but I thought on a forum of trophy hunters, "Japanese Games General" might be a bit weird and attract questions about unlocalized VN's and trophy stuff which isn't what I want to discuss. Ideally this thread will be for recommendations, questions, and discussion of localized Japanese games, upcoming localization's, or future Japanese games on console and PC. Also feel free to mention and talk about Japanese inspired games, lots of indies lately have popped up inspired by Japanese classics.

I'll also be keeping track of and updating PS4/Vita releases every month for the year.

And to kick things off, I actually had a question about Trails of Cold Steel.

I have the PS3 Lionheart edition of the first game, but I am wanting to retire my PS3 these days. Are the Vita versions of the games a big step down? Should I play these on PS3 before retiring it?

And for FF XV, I'd like to rescind my GOTY nomination for it. ... but I can't. As a video game it's deserving, but in retrospect I think it's a terrible Final Fantasy. The story is really bad, some of the biggest moments contextually have no emotional payoff because the game gives you no reason to care about certain characters. There are too many plotholes, and things left unsaid. It honestly feels like too much of the story happens off screen and you're left to assume so much. Also, chapter 13 is a travesty and buffing the magic won't make it any better. It's not difficult, what makes it a slog is that for an hour and a half you are forced to walk slowly through hallways with no story happening. There are like 4-6 books 3 sentences each which try to fill in some gaps about the Empire. The whole time Ardyn is laughing and taunting you instead of explaining anything about his character which could make him an interesting villain... Just ugh.

Trails of Cold Steel 3, PS4 Exclusive. Kinda surprised no Vita version this time around, but it looks like Falcom is getting better at 3d rendering lol.

Edit: And in other Falcom related news, Ys VIII PS4 version will have all the content cut from Vita version as well as PS4 exclusive content. So I guess they are serious about trying to close up the Vita well.

This release list per month might scare me as it just shows how big my pre order list really is. However its a nice idea.

I tried both Vita and PS3 versions of both trials of cold steel I and II. The vita played rather well I found no issues with it however I only used it for around 10 hours on each. The PS3 version had some minor lag in major battles from time to time but nothing noticeable.
The Graphics and sound on the vita versions were done rather well as well. Personally it would come down to preference as there was not any major differences that I could tell.

As for III lets just hope there is not a 2-4 year delay on the English release given xSeed are a rather small company. They also said it would depend on sales of the first twos to decide if they would do the third at all.

For today's relevant news on Japanese games:

  • Gravity Rush 2 Demo is out tomorrow! (Dec. 22nd)
  • NIS America has delayed 'Touhou Genso/Double focus' to March and "Birthdays The Beginning" to May.
  • TLG and FFXV both updated to 1.03 versions.
  • Atlus reveals new development team "Studio Zero" comprised of Atlus and Persona Team veterans, and announce first game project codenamed "Project Re Fantasy."

This release list per month might scare me as it just shows how big my pre order list really is. However its a nice idea.

Oh they better do CS3 lol, they can't just cliff-hanger us with 1 and 2 like that... I think they will announce localization efforts around or after E3 for it. XSeed is probably looking to snap up the latest Senran Kagura, I think they will announce this shortly after Fate/Extella launches. After or shortly before Akiba's Beat launches they will have to announce new plans because by then their console plate will be empty.

I agree with you about the monthly lists, but it's easy for me to copy and paste because for the most part it is my pre-order list exactly. :P Though I do double check with Amazon's 'coming soon' section, other wise I would have missed Kingdom Hearts. I want to try Kingdom Hearts sometimes because I really like Square Enix, but on the flip-side I really hate Disney lol. The combination is intriguing but awkward, every time I think I will buy the HD collections I stop myself at the last minute thinking I just couldn't get over the Disney aspects. :sweat

XSeed are just too small they are doing thier PC releases but this takes them a lot of time so it could even be longer before the 3rd is announced for the West.

I am not a fan of Disney and put the games off for so long but there were rather enjoyable if you just pretend they are not Disney.

While not officially announced Marvelous have already come out and said Peach Beach Splash will be released in both the West and Asian markets.

Well from my time as a PC gamer I know that their PC ports are often done out of studio by lone-wolf programmers (formerly Jessica Chavez who worked on TitS 1 almost completely alone) or out sourced to teams like the guys behind Recettear. Their in-house operations are almost exclusively console translations, programming, and license/localization acquisitions. So I remain hopeful. The reasons their PC games take so long is a bit different than what you're thinking.

Also I somehow missed this yesterday but the NieR Automata demo is out and is getting very positive reviews! :D

I already have the nier automata CE preordered from square enix store :D

My kingdom hearts collection also need to be started on some day; but I don't like to start too many long games if I haven't cleared the current ones.

I also want cold steel 3; but I do know Xseed staff are passionate but super overworked, don't blame them but really hope it will be out someday (soon) as well.

Until proven otherwise from Xseed this is all the proof I need;

Release Dates:

Trails of Cold Steel

  • JP: September 26, 2013
  • NA: December 22, 2015
  • EU: January 29, 2016

Trails of Cold Steel II

  • JP: September 25, 2014
  • NA: September 6, 2016
  • EU: November 11, 2016

Going on these dates I still won't be surprised if it takes 2+ years before the west gets their hands on this game.
Akiba's Trip took a year before the West got the game and the size of that game and detail is no where near the scale of the Trails game.

Yeah but they announced CS 1 in Jun. 2015, and dated CS 2 in Mar. 2016. From a solely western POV that's less than a year turnaround on each. I'm not gonna hold the Japanese release against them, before they even announced localization efforts because before then, if your intention is to play in English, the games might as well not even exist.

So I'm just tempering my expectations based on past trends atm.

=====

Looking at future releases, in March SE is releasing all the Kingdom Hearts HD games (single disc/collection from the looks of it) for just $50 on PS4. I mean, 6 games, $50... if I was ever gonna jump into the series that would be the time I guess.

I would have sprung on the NieR Automata CE myself, if they swapped the art book for a lore book similar to DoD3/Drakengard 3. ... or the original Nier. Got nothing against artbooks, but I find their novelty fades fast and I'm dangerously low on shelf space these days. :sweat

Updated OP just a little. Turns out the next digimon game is also coming out in Jan.

Updated releases to include February. January was missing Atelier Shallie Plus, fixed now.

Feb. seems a bit slow, two re-releases, a musuou, and a souls clone. :sweat Still gonna buy them all though lol. Except Naruto. Straight into the trash with that nonsense.

I think Nioh is going to be a much more competent game than the last Souls-like that was released, due to them trying to actually somewhat being their own thing and taking a lot of feedback from people from the Alpha and Beta. I'm looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

I'm real excited for Berserk as well, though I'm probably not going to get it right away due to having no monies after christmas spending.

Unfortunately for me, the PS4 Pro was just a little too late before Nioh's beta packed up and went home. I am weary of the Souls games, as the last game I completed on PC before coming back to PlayStation was DS1. My problem with the series is that I tend to be a man pushed onward by story. DS left me wanting in that regard quite badly. The lore is good, there is lots to read but the lack of an overall narrative to push you forward through a game whose every intention is to frustrate you... Well I found it very hard at times to see the worth in seeing it through to completion. (Of course all my friends who like Dark Souls just tell me I shouldn't have played anyway if I wanted a story... :ermm )

If Nioh can at least tell a decent story while kicking me in the face, I'll be happier with it by default.

As for Berserk, I know only of the series from hearsay, memes, and populist ravings. It's always been on my watch/read list but... well the hard part for me to accept is that fans always complain about how it's unfinished and how uninterested the author seems to have become. I don't like to jump into media with big gaping holes that still need filling. I don't want to be left wanting forever, you know? I don't mind a cliffhanger or even obvious sequel bait, but if you listen to fans of Berserk, there are whole arcs left without conclusion in sight... :sweat

Only for people who care about them. :P

What does the Fate game play like? Is it just typical hack and slash kinda thing?

I'm splitting Gravity Rush 2 with a friend so I have that to play this weekend now, very excited for it.

Also nearly finished Drakengard 3, just have branch D and the grinding left to do. And got a copy of Neir to play now as well.

Extella is basically a musou game with Visual Novel segments which tell the the story in-between. I suspect it's a 50-80 hour platinum. The unfortunate part is that a good bit of knowledge on the Nasuverse/Fate properties is definitely required to make full-sense of the story and I think like 99.9% of the PS4/Vita user-base missed Fate/Extra from the PSP days. :sweat

Ending D is quite something lol, Enjoy! :lol The grinding is made a whole lot less with the DLC if you get all the chests in them. Just make sure not to waste any Gold on the DLC weapons, tempting as it is. Did you enjoy Drakengard 3's story at all? I guess it might seem a little weird without previous Yoko Taro games to draw wisdom from. He's definitely my favorite director though since he manages to make coherent but mysterious and dark stories with food for thought on like the crappiest development budgets lol. Well in that sense I guess that's why the Automata hype is so big, since it looks like Square gave him a "decent" budget this time at least.

I want to replay NieR myself, before Automata but it's such a pain to plat imo. Well it's not hard but time-consuming because of the randomness to material collecting.  ... And I do hate RNG. :suicide Still I will do it because why not lol, though maybe not before Automata.

=======

Preliminary list for March is up. Some dates subject to change. To clarify what with Switch coming out soonish, I will only be keeping track of PlayStation games here. If people would like to discuss Japanese games on Switch however, feel free. :thumbsup

Would watching any of the Fate anime help with story at all or is it seperate from the anime story arcs? I'll probably play it from the gameplay alone but I'd like to be able to understand it.

I love the story in Drakengard. Just the general writing and how weird it is is great. It's a real shame the number of technical issues the game has, because if it ran better and didn't look like a launch PS3 game during gameplay it probably would have been more popular.

I'm really looking forward to Automata now because of that. Platinum is great at doing awesome gameplay which is one of the things lacking in Drakengard, so with that combined with the guy's writing this could very well turn out to be one of their best games.
